A collaborative team approach to refurbish an historic building with important community value
The Civic Theatre required significant refurbishment to address pressing issues related to the condition and age of the building. We ensured heritage best practices were implemented to return elements of the building back to their original state. The project works were completed within budget, and variation works were approved and completed to meet the revised contractual duration.
Funding from the Provincial Growth Fund created the opportunity for this project to support community recovery following the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. This included working with the Ministry for Social Development to find Māori and Pasifika workers displaced by COVID. We also focused on using local businesses, engaging many local subcontractors and suppliers in the region.
Strong stakeholder management was critical during this project and we worked especially closely with the long-term tenants of the venue to include them in all decision-making.
