The rejuvenation of a cherished local icon for the community
Since the 1950s, this iconic building has been a cherished asset for the local Strathmore Park community.
The rejuvenation project was an opportunity to strengthen the structure against seismic activity, while fostering stronger connections with the community. Using features such as a new kitchen, upgraded bathrooms, reconfigured internal layout, refreshed wall linings, and improved roofing and cladding, the community hub has undergone a remarkable transformation.
A standout feature is the installation of a large corner window, ingeniously complemented by sliding metal and cedar screens. This integration elevates the experience for both external observers and internal users. Designed by Pokau Te Ahuru, the intricate screens titled "He Kura Tipua, He Kura Kairangi" pay tribute to the rich history of Motu Kairangi by incorporating tukutuku patterns and principles. The coordination and execution of this prominent element posed significant challenges, but the resulting sense of accomplishment was immense as it defines and distinguishes the site.
